Energex Active Device Management

In the Energex network area, dedicated EV charging equipment above 20A must have active device management. A typical 32A single-phase dedicated charger must be connected through one of the allowed arrangements — such as an economy tariff with a network device, a primary tariff with basic active management, or a primary tariff with a dynamic connection. Energy Gate designs the connection around your supply, tariff goals, solar use and the current Energex requirements.

A safe, compliant installation

An EV charger needs its own dedicated circuit back to the switchboard, correctly sized cable for the run and the Queensland heat, a dedicated breaker and isolation, and the right safety switch. We assess whether your switchboard or supply can take the load, use load management where it avoids a costly upgrade, and issue the electrical safety certificate on completion.

Built to Australian standards

EV charging circuits are installed to the wiring rules (AS/NZS 3000), which set specific requirements for EV supply equipment: a dedicated circuit, correct cable sizing and protection, and DC-fault protection — either a Type B RCD, or a Type A RCD paired with a 6 mA DC fault-detection device, which many quality chargers build in.

Not rebate-eligible, still a smart move

EV chargers are not covered by the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which supports eligible battery storage, not vehicle chargers. The saving comes from convenience and cost — charging at home is far cheaper than the public network, and close to free from your own solar.

  I found Energy Gate's advertisement for Goodwe battery installs whilst scrolling Facebook Marketplace and decided to contact them for a quote. Fred, the business owner, was prompt to reply and gave good advice and a very competitive price for a premium Goodwe 15kw inverter and 16.6kw battery stack. I was initially hesitant, but after checking the company out online and finding only glowing  reviews I decided to give them a go. Fred, the owner of this local business, is a qualified solar installer and electrical engineer. Instead of dealing with a sales person from a large business, I could directly address all my concerns with the actual installer who also supplies backup service if necessary. I can honestly say that Fred explained everything patiently in easy to understand language and set the system up perfectly. It looks good and works well. Are EV chargers covered by the federal battery rebate?

No. The Cheaper Home Batteries Program covers eligible home battery storage only, and EV chargers are specifically excluded. We say this plainly because some advertising blurs the line. The real saving with a home charger comes from cheap overnight or solar charging compared with public charging and petrol, not from a rebate.

Does Energex need to be notified or approve my charger?

Smaller single-phase chargers are generally straightforward, but larger or three-phase chargers can require notifying the network. In some cases load management lets a charger be added without triggering a supply upgrade. We handle any network requirements and design the installation to suit your supply, so you do not have to navigate that yourself.

Can I charge my EV from my solar panels?

Yes, and it is one of the best ways to run an EV almost for free. Many smart chargers offer a solar-matching mode that charges the car using your surplus solar rather than exporting it for a few cents. If you have solar, or are considering it, we can set the charger to prioritise your own generated power.

What if my switchboard is on the opposite side of the house from where I park?

That is common and entirely workable. It means planning the cable route and sizing the cable for the distance to avoid voltage drop, occasionally with a sub-board to keep things neat. A longer run can add some cost, which we set out clearly in the quote rather than springing it on you. We will find the most practical, compliant path.

Will the charger work with any EV, including my next one?

Home AC chargers in Australia use the Type 2 connector, which fits the vast majority of EVs sold here, so the chargers we install work across brands. Changing cars later does not mean changing your charger. We confirm your vehicle’s connector and onboard charging capability when recommending a unit, so it is a proper match.

How long does it take to charge an EV at home?

A typical 7kW home charger adds enough range overnight for most daily driving and fully recharges most EVs from low in a single night. The exact time depends on your car’s battery size and how much charge you need, but for the vast majority of households, plugging in overnight means starting each day full.

Why install a dedicated charger instead of the cable that came with my car?

The portable cable supplied with most EVs plugs into a normal power point and charges very slowly. Fine occasionally, but a full charge can take a day or more, and continuously loading a standard power point is not ideal. A properly installed wall charger is faster, safer and purpose-built for daily use, which is why most EV owners move to one.

Home, business & fleet charging

For businesses and strata sites, the design needs to consider multiple vehicles, load sharing, metering, access control, cable routes, billing and future expansion. Energy Gate can scope AC charging and discuss DC charging where the electrical supply and business case justify it. For most homes, AC charging is the right answer — DC fast charging is usually a commercial or fleet decision rather than a normal residential upgrade.
